Superb location: 12 min walk to the beach, 5 min stroll to the main shopping centre, and a 1 min walk to the biggest park in town for kicking the ball around.
Expansive views, from the hills to the sea will surround you. Leave the city behind and let your eye spend all day wandering the horizon. The west side deck looks to the hills and the north beach, while the large east side deck lets your eyes roam from Mayor Island, all the way, astonishingly, to Mount Maunganui. The east deck is covered over the long table for to keep the rays down and the rain out, while the rest is uncovered for sunny lounging around.
Bedrooms: Bedroom 1/3 is a front master bedroom with 2 king singles that can be split or together. Bedroom 2/3 contains a double bed next to an 80-year-old antique oak king single bed (the mattress is much newer!). Bedroom 3/3 contains a king that can be split to 2 single beds. (You must give us at least 2 days notice if you want beds split). Bedroom 1/3 away from lounge - great for sneaky naps or a quiet phone call.
Lounge & dining: The compact sun-drenched lounge is comfortable and practical, complete with ‘70s honeycomb lights and a bookshelf to flick through. Inside table can be extended to seat 8.Â
The original 1950’s section of the house flows into a super-practical 1970’s galley kitchen with good bench-space.Â
Kitchen: decked out for cooks who want to nourish their families and friends. There’s a servery window out to the east deck, the Weber BBQ and the long outside table. (Dishwasher will be installed by December 20, 2024). Cookware is stainless steel and cast iron. From stylish dinner plates to slightly retro casserole dishes, the kitchen obstinately refuses to be run-of-the ‘Airbnb’ mill.Â
Bathrooms: 2 bathrooms, a larger practical bathroom (replete with a pink 1950s retro toilet, laundry tub and a family-size washing machine) and a smaller 1950’s yellow and white bathroom which received a smashing reno in the 1970’s when someone decided it needed a fashionable (!) avocado sink.
Wifi & Audio Visual: Coverage is excellent and non-intrusive. We’re aware you need excellent sound to relax to and have designed the audio-visual systems for easy streaming from your personal device. Courtesy Netflix, Neon and Prime are available too.
(Please note, you’ll be surrounded by long-term residents who all have our numbers, should the sound system be turned too high).
It’s all about quality because we want you to have a healthy reset from the minute you walk in the door. This is a home to relax and restore.
The backyard: You might be coming for sun and surf, but you also have a surprisingly wild terraced garden to discover. We have a secret garden on the first terrace suitable for picnics and cartwheels, and an overgrown loop around the garden below. The backyard is stacked with fruit trees and native New Zealand plants. It’s a haven for native birds. Oranges might be in season, or plums or guava, or self-seeding gooseberries. Watch your footing and keep an eye out for windfall fruit. Pick a couple of kawa kawa leaves for a cup of tea. It’s naturally messy, with weeds and grasses – it’s spray-free and just the place for kids to explore away from the road.
NB.Â
Your hosts: Two professionals. Darren, a classic kiwi dad, who pays attention to detail, knows his tech and cooks a mighty steak. Jodie, a cook who recognises the value (and joy) of an efficient and enticing kitchen and a big fridge - nourishing food is key to strong, happy bodies. :)
